My Two Cents - March 2011

"My Two Cents!" is a place to speak your mind about what troubles (and inspires) you about Florida's juvenile justice system and the Department of Juvenile Justice, in particular.

Does anyone know how Low and Moderate risk residential programs will do under the new administration? Will they be closed?

Low risk programs are probably an endangered species. There are fewer than 100 beds statewide. I imagine Moderate risk beds will be reduced with the new Secretaru's emphasis on using community based resources and prevention before sending a kid off to a program.

I'm surprised Cathy has not devoted any attention to the DJJ reform bills in the House and Senate. Big money giveaway to providers. More space is devoted to Leo Boatman than this major legistation. Cmon Cathy tell us what ya think:)

Who's the director at OYDC in Crestview now? I heard Gulf coast is losing the contract and Terry Sessions has been replaced..

Jeff Kaplan losing a contract!@! Great news if true. This mohair suit wearing rascal has been the biggest enemy of any accountability that the state has tried to impose upon programs run by his company. His programs have well earned reputations of abusing kids and committing fraud. May the rest of his programs be yanked!

Violations of Code of Conduct and Ethics Violations by a Volusia County Probation Officer Supervisor and a Senior Management in Volusia County. Everyone knows what was done and they will probably get away with it. Circuit 7 Management has nothing on OJ. They can get away with murder too! I wonder what would happen if the media was contacted about these violations?

DJJ is closing Panther Center in Jasper,Florida...its non-secure low and moderate risk and is run by The White Foundation,,is this a pattern? What about Nassau Residential in Fernandina Beach?
Should people even apply for positions in low and moderate risk programs?
Gulf Coast Youth Services is laying people off.

To the person that keeps posting about Circuit 7 probation staff, "everybody" does NOT know what was done. If you don't want to give details here, and really think the media would be interested, call them. Keeping issues to yourself and making vague accusations isn't helping anybody, and is an injustice to any alleged victims.

I heard that all of the youth at Dozier School have been sent to other programs. Is this true? Is Dozier closing or what?

Anonymous said...

Yes Dozier is slated for closing

How about Nassau Residential in Fernandina Beach?

I am hearing through the ranks that Desoto is also a potential closure. Has anyone heard this?

Anonymous said...

If Desotot isnt slated for closing, it should be. Sexy Rexy with his secret dealings have just made a mess of this place when who thought it could get any worse, with kids like zombies because they are on over 6 times the approved dosages of meds!!!

The public should be in up roar with all of these programs closing for juveniles. I am not sure if these people that are making all these BIG decisions are really thinking about public safety. Youthful offenders that need to be incarcerated still out in the public reeking havoc on innocent people who will now be potential victims of their next crime all because the Juvenile Justice System is looking to save money. Well, letting these criminals loose on the street is definitely not the answer either. We (the citizens) have a right to be safe and to feel safe. Laying off all these people who work for DJJ and increasing the number of people who are now or will be on unemployment isn't the solution either. There has to be something done and it has to start with the elected Government and those who he has appointed into office. But the real question is.....Will there be anything done? AND...How much more can the state of Florida take before our crime rates sky rocket and more people have to become victims before something is done.

Kids can,t vote and even if they did they would vote to close the facilites! Their parents are poor and have no political power(notice we never get youth from wealthy families)
